I’m experiencing burnout but I can’t afford to take a break.
Long story short - new manager came in 6 months ago. Replaced 50% of the team. I was kept because I have some skills no one else in the organization has, and have a good relationship with/ other departments.
While the new manager was never outwardly hostile, she was clearly displeased about having my responsibilities on her team since I almost exclusively serve other departments.
I tried to ingratiate myself with her but so far it hasn’t really worked. I believed the main reason was that I have ADHD and take medications (and the resulting social anxiety that results from it) that make me seem aloof and low energy.
In retrospect, I should have started looking earlier but I was promised a promotion by the outgoing manager due to prior contributions and wanted to see what happens. That fell through.
This experience put a toll on my mental health. I’m losing sleep, “crashing out”, and becoming less social, which in turn sours my relationship with my manager more. I’m using my all my energy on meeting my deadlines and have no energy left to socialise.
Realistically speaking, I cannot stop to focus on my mental health, as 1) I have mortgage payments and 2) I work abroad and my visa is contingent on my ability to make above a certain salary.
I just don’t know what I can do to improve my situation and/or mental health. I’m actively looking for positions but my body is threatening to crash out on me every morning.
How do I stay afloat?
