Anyone else just not care about other humans?

Question

Whenever someone is depressed, people ask them to think of reasons to live. At the top of the list is invariably “friends/family”. I personally don’t care about this. To me, it’s like saying “the road” or “a piece of dust”. I just feel completely apathetic towards it.

Don’t get me wrong, I have liked people, mostly historical figures. I like reading about what they think of the world and have to say. I can absolutely fall in love (platonically) with the minds of some people. I like to discuss art or culture with people. However, the moment things turn “chummy” and they want to know me personally, I want to stop talking to them.

I don’t have family any more but when I did I never missed them when away from them. They were fine, I liked their company, but it’s as if I can’t form deep emotional connections in my heart.

I feel alone. Everything revolves around family and other people. People always put others on a pedestal and neglect themselves. I reject this and cannot connect with it.

Is this normal? I am suspected to be high-functioning autistic/Asperger’s. I am gay and still desire companionship but maybe I’m a bit asexual or something? (Is that the right term?)

Advice welcome.
