Prologue for Book One

“Magic is the universe’s innate desire to create, grow, and experience novelty.”

That’s the truth of this world. Magic is a force of nature, with a “will” of its own. And the language you speak is used to cast spells.

33 years ago, during the summer of 1997, **something miraculous happened.** For millennia, magic had only been a myth. Humanity had forgotten the old power it once possessed. It conquered the physical world through agriculture, trading, industry, and war. In this new modern age, the concept of magic was just as ridiculous as the Tooth Fairy, or Santa Claus. Magic was the kind of thing you’d read to a child about before they laid their head at night.

Then, After 6,000 years, magic returned to the Earth. The modern world regained something it had lost from the ancient one. But, this sudden return of magic, sparked the resurrection of a being who existed long ago. During the time of the First Language. One who laid dormant on this Earth, waited patiently for 6,000 years, as humanity continued to develop. This being possessed an incomprehensible amount of power. A nearly unmatched mastery over magic that earned him the title of “god-king”. This ancient king was a philosopher, with vast wisdom. But, his ideology was in direct opposition to the desires of magic itself. He viewed creation, growth, and novelty as humanity’s first sins. In his eyes, humanity’s constant evolution and change, is what he believed was the root of war, death, and suffering. While not entirely wrong, it was only a partial truth. Novelty facilitates the destruction of the old, but it also creates meaning in the "new". In his own twisted sense of justice, all mankind should think the same, look the same, and act the same. He desired the end of human suffering, by ending human freedom itself.

5 years had passed since the resurrection of the ancient king (1998-2003). The king had learned greatly about the modern world. How we speak, what we love, what we hate. He mastered a vast number of modern day languages that exist on Earth. In just 5 years, the ancient king understood humanity better than we understood ourselves. And he was disgusted by it.

1 year later (2004), the king created a spell known as “Unity”, and spread it across every inch of the earth. All knowledge of human languages was erased. Replaced with a cold, dead tongue. All written and digital texts, all memories, all artifacts, all history. Everything. Rewritten and hidden away in the snap of a finger. The ancient king designed a language that ensured humanity’s innate desire to create and express themselves would never show itself again. And severed our connection to magic through his “fake” sterile language. The chaos and beauty of mankind’s creativity, gone…in the blink of an eye. Every human being, of every culture… Of all ages, of all races, unified into a cage that they aren’t even aware exists.

But. Magic has desires of its own. In retaliation to the king, magic creates something impossible. Something that would spark the downfall of the king. And the end of Unity.
