Neck brace v surgery for AAI ?

My 4-1/2 lb Yorkie was trampled by a 33 lb Wheaten (twice) & has been diagnosed with Atlantoaxial Instability.

Has anyone ever decided NOT to do the surgery & had their furbaby live the rest of their life (fairly well) in a brace?
