Starting to taper tonight, need to embrace long-term sobriety

Just wanted to join a support group. This seems like a positive, non-judgmental place. Hopefully I can offer some support to somebody else down the line eventually. After years of drinking, spending time in rehabs, hospitals, I'm coming to grips with the need for long term sobriety. I know the one day at a time mentality - I used to go to AA meetings years ago, still, long-term sobriety definitely freaks me out.

My wife is at her breaking point, and I've made some bad choices. My health has suffered. I'm tired of lying to myself. I'm tapering with 10 drinks tonight, 8 tomorrow, and I should be good to go. I've done this before with this taper schedule and have been able to go from 8 drinks to zero with minimal withdrawal - usually just a few days of insomnia. Thankfully due to my job and responsibilities I've not been able to drink like when I was younger, when I needed medical help to come off alcohol. I don't drink around the clock anymore and I've been averaging 12-15 drinks a night. The problem is sometimes I rebound when trying to taper and end up getting drunk again, so I try to begin abstinence as soon as possible. A long taper for me usually gets me drunk again.
