The name of your game
Eyes scanning the room,
Smile growing as I recognize
A familiar face.
We’ve locked eyes before,
Yet there’s something different.
A hunger I haven’t seen until now.
I’m just seeing things.
Surely it was just a glitch.
There’s no way.
Boundaries and lines
That cannot be crossed.
Words flow from your mouth,
Dripping with honey
But why do they put me on edge?
Like I’m navigating
A field of land mines,
Afraid to set them off.
I’m just imagining things.
Your lines,
Well rehearsed,
Like a memorized song,
Well worn,
Like your favorite golf clubs.
You offer to be a confidante,
A knight in shining armor.
A little too eager,
You appear when you see
The cracks in my armor.
Am I reading too much into things?
They’re just nice.
They’ve always been nice.
Nothing sinister hidden.
But something doesn’t feel right.
I can’t put my finger on it.
Constantly messaging,
Trying to pull me towards you.
As if trying to strike
When the iron is hot,
To not lose any momentum gained.
In case, no one ever told you,
The word, “no,”
Is a complete sentence.
I don’t owe you any explanations.
Whoa, whoa, whoa,
Hold on a minute,
You want to take me where?
Alone,
Away from prying eyes….
To do what, exactly?…
Your mask slips,
Revealing your true intentions.
Well my “friend,”
You can move along.
I’m not a trophy to be won,
Not another notch
On your bedpost.
Take your honeyed words
And empty promises
And leave.
I don’t want to see you again,
No matter how you persist
And yes,
I know about the other woman.
The one that you’ve strung along
With the same lines.
The one you meet offsite,
Away from prying eyes.
You thought I’d never find out, huh?
Let’s just say,
We are both full of surprises
And I know
The name of your game.
I’m not falling for it.
I’m not interested.
