Turning Telemann into Bach

Music

So, Aus Pieds du Roy, led by Michael Form, released a CD called JS Bach: Recovered Chamber Concertos. For their first concerto, they included a piece of music I had never heard before. BWV 1063r. I had never heard this piece by Bach. I understood it was a reconstruction, but I wondered if they might have reconstructed the movement from a fragment of Bach's. No luck. I later bought the CD and discovered that they had composed a neoi-baroque (as they call it) pastiche of Bach; and it's really quite lovely. Bach would have most definitely been proud if one of his students had written this. And then, just this past week, a new album was released: Telemann Complete Violin Concertos Vol. 9 by L'Orfeo Barockorchester, led by Carin van Heerden; and guess what I hear, this, the Cantabile to Telemann's Concerto for 4 violins. Gotcha. Interesting to hear how Leonard Schick turned Telemann's movement into something Bachian. I've always admired contemporary musicians/composers who can pull off this sort of thing.
