“Autism Mom”

I saw a post on Facebook that was talking about a “brave mom handling her autistic child’s meltdown”. Soooo being a parent? I absolutely HATE when neurotypical parents claim their child’s neurodivergence as their personality trait. They are not “autism moms” or “autism dads”. They are parents. Do they have unique parenting struggles because their child has autism? Absolutely! Do they deserve to have a community to talk to other parents who have been/are in similar situations? Of course! But don’t claim someone else’s neurotype as your personality trait.

“A mom helps her autistic child who is having a meltdown” would be a better title. Or even better yet, DONT RECORD THE STRUGGLES OF YOUR MINOR CHILDREN AND POST THEM ONLINE! Posting a picture that your child drew is fine. Telling a funny anecdote about when your child did/said something silly is fine. Posting videos of your child in their most vulnerable moments is never ok.

Thoughts?

(PS: I am autistic)
