Nexus with a New Driver soon (transition away from WinRing0)

Pinned

Hi everyone,

You may have seen Windows Defender report Nexus Service as a trojan, claiming the need to quarantine the software. We made no changes to Nexus or its security to trigger this.

Since earlier this year, Microsoft decided to flag a specific driver named WinRing0, causing some (but not all) users to see a warning. This is the driver that allows Nexus to read your PC stats and control fans, among other things.

This is the same driver in use by other software such as FanControl, LibreHardware, OpenRGB, and others.

Since earlier this year, we made changes to this driver and submitted it to Microsoft for validation, putting our name on the line in order to redistribute it to the community. Microsoft has not made it an easy process.

So, this summer, we decided to move away from WinRing0 and roll our own implementation. Our goal is to swap out the library on an upcoming Nexus build and keep all our features intact. We're currently undergoing testing and we're seeing promising results.

I assure you that it is safe for you to continue using Nexus. In fact, we've been solidifying our APIs and reducing our dependency on foreign libraries (with Nexus 2.7, we went from a 410Mb downloadable to 260Mb!).

I'll keep you posted on the developments, as always. I also invite you to try our Nexus 2.7-beta which we plan on bringing out of beta next week. Your feedback is always invaluable!

Join us on Discord on the Nexus beta channel, we're always very active there.
