a man's shadow
He opens the door to his one bedroom apartment, half cleaned but if looked at long enough was noticeably still messy. After a long hard working day, It makes sure to remind him of what was actually achieved during those back breaking hours the man worked, it told him just how much of a rest he deserved. It made sure he knew exactly how hard he worked that day. It says nothing. He prepares to sleep after a well cooked meal of instant noodles, throwing something unintelligible on that he will put on again tomorrow with no memory of seeing it already the day before, just noise to help him sleep before another productive day. He drifts off with thoughts of all the things that will get done tomorrow and goals he wishes to achieve, yet thoughts and dreams are all they will remain just like the promises of yesterday or the day before that. After the sun disappears In the darkness it stirs, its shape rises up with an all consuming blackness penetrated by nothing, its form human in shape but with no features. Darkness is its only feature, its arms don’t end, they simply merge with the rest of the dark in the room, its legs no different. It stands over the living corpse wordlessly. It should be happy, it should be proud like every shadow is of the one who casts it, yet how could something be proud of this? Something so pathetic, something so weak minded. How could it praise something that it knows is undeserving when it could be so much more, someONE more…disgusting. The thought of another day in the presence of such an undeserving heathen made it want to vomit, so it decided to do something unthought of. It commits a silhouette’s sin. It reaches out and touches the corpse's throat. It was warm, it could feel the blood pumping through the living corpse every beat making it madder and madder, pushing it to the brink of insanity before it pushes down harder. Its barley formed upper arm sinking into the man as though he was made of nothing. The warmth of the corpse's body traveling up its own more and more until-beep beep beep. It wakes up stretching. a new day, a day to achieve that which was dreamt mere hours before. No BIGGER, It steps outside feeling the sun on its skin, it turns in the opposite direction looking down at the figure cast by the sun. No longer stuck looking up at that which it hates most, instead looking down at it laughing, laughing like it was the first time it could be heard by someone else alive, laughing as if it was alive, no it was alive. He tries to look around but can’t, he tries to move but can’t. Confused, he yells for help getting no reply. He screams, no reply. until…laughter, loud, unfiltered, joyful laughter. Finally his eyes adjust. He sees what's laughing and as he does he takes a minute to realize why he can’t move, why he can’t smell, why he can't taste. It is because he is nothing. Nothing but someone else's shadow.
