Cancelled a short trip because husband and I both had a strong gut feeling about the baby

Rant

My husband and I just got out of a difficult year in a very closed community. We were the only foreign couple living there, and neither of us is white. It's the kind of place where some homes don't even have locks on their doors (population is a few thousand), but I do get racially harassed in public, we've had people spit on us in the street and puncture our bicycle tires. When I got pregnant, we resolved to move because our child absolutely does not deserve this kind of treatment. We sold our apartment as soon as my husband found a new job. I am currently on maternity leave.

The apartment buyer is a member of the community and made things difficult for us, including going back on several verbal agreements. In the end I insisted on communicating with him in writing only because I didn't trust him. I kept everything to the point and impersonal, but of course there was intimidation, manipulation and mind games. In the end we managed to avoid getting scammed more than we already agreed to be scammed. After finalising the sale, I'm supposed to travel back to hand over the keys because my husband has work.

Initially I was excited for the trip because I get to go through the capital and have a free day there, but last night I had a sudden wave of panic over losing the baby. I thought it was just anxiety and didn't mention it aloud, but this morning, as soon as he woke up, my husband told me not to go to meet the buyer. He's usually not like this; however, from experience I know that he has a very sharp intuition. We discussed alternatives and he decided against sending the keys, as well as asking a friend to hand them over. We both rationalised that probably nothing will happen to me, but neither of us could be comfortable with the idea of me going. We felt silly, yet at the same time we felt it would be irresponsible to ignore such a strong feeling. In the end he told his employer, who said it's not a problem at all for him to go, so the situation is resolved thanks to him.

This country feels different now. When I first came here I never felt scared, but now I am careful not to look too friendly or to make any accidental eye contact when walking down the street. My husband said people here give me dirty looks. We know some foreigners who have been attacked, hit with bikes, etc.; we can never say for sure whether some things are just accidents, but it gives us an uneasy feeling. I am visibly pregnant, and I've never felt so vulnerable in my life.

A decade ago our country took in less than 100 refugees, but locals set their shelter on fire. Now the EU requests our government to take in about 80 more or pay a fine. The government is leaning towards the fine, so there are very very few actual refugees here aside from white Ukrainian ones. But increasingly more people act like we are migrants, accusing us of being illegal even though we both speak the language, and I even have citizenship. I've always loved this country. Many people treat us very, very well. It's true that there were always waves of racial attacks, as well as protests against foreigners and even international students from time to time. I just went on with my life, and now I suddenly realised I'm pregnant and so scared, the baby will never pass for a local, my husband worries for my safety, we don't want to let each other out of sight, I feel so overwhelmed and like I had failed us somehow.
