What's the appeal of spaghetti with meatballs?

Like, sure, both meatballs and spaghetti with tomato sauce are nice, but why would you combine them? Especially the huge meatballs I keep seeing when that dish is pictured anywhere. Like, if you want something to go with your spaghetti, why not choose something small that fits a fork while rolling up some of the noodles? Or if you want pasta with your giant meatballs, why not choose something more forkable, like penne or fusilli?
