In-universe financials of Jurassic World: The Volcano One

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

Hey all, has anyone ever crunched the numbers on Mills' operation in the second Jurassic World? ie - Has anyone ever estimated the cost of deploying a ship, dozens of civilian and military grade land vehicles, multiple Chinooks and hundreds of mercenaries to Isla Nublar, vs the return on investment?

Without any real skill in this area, and assuming everything is owned and not chartered due to the huge risk and unique fit-out requirements:

  • Ship - US$100m+ - Big ro-ro, 20-40k displacement?
  • Helos - US$20m+ x2 - airframes have sold at auction for a lot less - but in this scenario we're talking about mission ready units bought at short notice.
  • Unimogs/Volvos/FMTVs/Caimans - US500k+ x30 - specialised heavy vehicles, heavily customised for dino transport
  • Military grade light vehicles/cranes/etc - US$100k+ x10
  • Personnel - US$2500 per pax per day base rate, tripled for hazard pay and insurance. We'll say 30 days - 10ish days round trip, 3 expedition, the rest padded out for training, logistics and post-expedition security. Plus loadouts of maybe 20k per head? Let's say a crew of 200.
  • OpEx - Fuel, food, water, ammo, vet supplies, etc.

That would put the total expedition cost in the US200m-250m range, maybe half of which is recoverable, assuming everything goes perfectly - and it never would, because dinosaurs and volcano.

On the other side of the ledger you've got a fire sale of maybe 20-30 dinos for US$10m-$15m each? Racehorses sell for more than that.

It just really seems like an incredibly costly, high-risk venture for fairly minimal gain, and took me right back to Dr Evil holding the world to ransom for one million dollars. Not quite as egregious as the whole "The Indominus is worth $26m, we can't kill it" - when a single fatality would cost more than that in liability, let alone park closures, bad publicity, reduced visitor numbers, etc.

For a couple of movies with big "corporate greed bad" themes, they make a very good argument for putting lawyers and accountants in charge of everything.
