Trainers attacking their partners?

I haven't played in a while. Is it normal for trainers to attack their doubles partner now? I was watching the battle text and my opponent polteageist was night shading the others cufant until it died 2 turns when I had only used stun spore and parting shot on my turns dealing no damage. Trainers in question Macro cosmos trainers? They only had one each on floor 35
