Questions about Sri Lanka road trip in Feb
Hello everyone!
We’re planning a trip to Sri Lanka in the last week of February. Our group: 2 adults + a 10-year-old child. We’ll be traveling by rental car. Beaches are not a priority — we’re mostly interested in nature, wildlife, and the most important cultural sights.
Here’s our draft itinerary so far:
Day 1. Arrival at 9 AM, formalities, car rental. Visit Dambulla Cave Temple and hike up Pidurangala Rock. Overnight nearby.
Day 2. Royal Botanic Gardens, Temple of the Tooth, Ambuluwawa Tower (closes at 5 PM; if we don’t make it, we’ll go tomorrow morning). Overnight somewhere around Gampola.
Day 3. Ramboda Falls, Labookellie Tea Lounge (not sure if it’s the best choice — open to suggestions), then Dansinan Falls, Devon Waterfall. If time permits — Nuwara Eliya. Overnight closer to Ella (possibly Hill Safari).
Day 4. Early morning at Lipton’s Seat, then Nine Arches Bridge, hike Little Adam’s Peak, maybe Ravana Ella Waterfall. Overnight in Ella.
The next part is still uncertain. We’d like to visit both safari parks, but the logistics are a bit tricky. Here’s a rough plan:
Day 5. Morning visit to Diyaluma Falls and Buduruwagala Raja Maha Viharaya. Then [????] and overnight near Udawalawe National Park, where we plan a morning safari the next day.
Day 6. Morning safari in Udawalawe. Then we need to overnight near Tissa, since we want to do a safari in Yala the following day. Not sure what’s worth doing in between (after the elephant safari and before overnight in Tissa).
Day 7. Morning safari in Yala, then drive to Mirissa. On the way we’d like to stop at a lighthouse and a turtle beach. Overnight in Mirissa.
Day 8. Morning whale watching trip from Mirissa. The rest of the day is free (still undecided). Next day we fly out of Colombo at 4 AM, so we’ll have plenty of time.
Questions:
- What would be a good way to spend the free time on Day 5 after Diyaluma Falls and Buduruwagala Raja Maha Viharaya? Does it make sense to combine Bundala National Park (birds, flamingos) in the evening after Udawalawe, or would that be too much?
- When we visited Alaska this July, our whale cruise was canceled due to bad weather. How often does this happen in Mirissa? We’ve planned whale watching for the last day — should we move it earlier in the itinerary, just in case?
- Is Labookellie Tea Lounge a “tourist conveyor belt,” or are there more atmospheric tea estates (like Pedro Estate, Blue Field)?
- Could you recommend hotels in Gampola and Ella? We don’t need luxury service — what we value most are beautiful views and possibly some wildlife around.
- Any lodge recommendations near Udawalawe and Tissa that can help organize safaris?
- Finally, could you give a general review of this itinerary and suggestions for improvements? Which day looks overloaded, and where could we add another stop?
Thanks in advance!
