Can we stop acting like copyright law is necessary to protect the oh so precious I.P.?
Whenever the issue of copyright and public domain is brought up. People say we need copyright so big ass mega corporations can protect the sanctity of Star Wars or Spider-Man from grifters like those terrible slasher movies starring Winnie the Pooh or Popeye.
I’m like first of all creators rarely own the rights to their IP in most creative fields thanks to Work for Hire laws and with how creativity is a inherently collaborative process even in cases where a creator owns the right to their story they often screwed up a co creator.
Also like being under the control of some faceless mega corporations doesn’t protect the sanctity of a IP. Marvel Comics literally made a comic where Spider-Man made a deal with the devil to save his dying aunt. That’s official Marvel Comics done by the rights owner.
It’s not the only one. Remember that version of the Hulk who’s a cannibal hillbilly warlord that rapes his cousin? That’s officially published by Marvel Comics. Also remember that time that Carol Danvers was raped and gave birth to her rapist? Also official.
Also no one says about how Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is ruined because someone wrote a version of Pride and Prejudice set in a zombie apocalypse.
The existence of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies doesn’t in anyway violate the original book.
We don’t need mega corporations to guard the rights to the immaterial concept of Spiderman or Lord of the Rings.
Like shitty horror movies doesn’t ruin the honor of Winnie the Pooh.
I literally heard someone say public domain was bad because it meant more movies that misunderstand the point like Zack Snyder’s Watchmen. You mean the Watchmen movie made by the official copyright holder owners of Watchmen IP and not the original creators because of the profoundly fucked up nature of IP law.
