I think this game would benefit from an easy mode
Firstly, I love it. I genuinely think this game is meticulously crafted and so far I wouldn’t change anything. The difficulty spikes feels natural and well crafted. The initial hard area (I won’t name) seemed clearly optional. The diagonal pogo felt weird at first but now feels great to use. If it allowed more air time or had a higher hit box it would feel too easy - but that’s just me. Others seem to think differently. But that leads me to my central point.
I think an easy mode would benefit this game. Hollow knight wasn’t as hard, and unlike a series like dark souls, I don’t think difficulty is the primary reason people like Hollow Knight. People enjoy the exploration mostly. For people who appreciate difficulty, like myself, the game feels well balanced. Losing two hearts doesn’t piss me off because it trains me to approach the situation differently, or re strategise. But for some people, losing two hearts and all their rosaries is a bummer.
I introduce: Exploration mode -
in this alternate mode, players can focus on the story and exploration. Here are the changes.
-Players now only drop 1/2 their shards and rosaries
-No Two heart damage (most enemies deal half heart)
- The pogo mechanic is altered, with a larger hitbox and more air time.
I don’t think it fits into team cherries design style to make this, but who knows.
