How do you guys measure?

I used to just use my biggest measurements which was along the side and base girth, but I felt that’s cheating so now I’m strictly on top down the center for length and midshaft girth. I’m 8.1 x 6.3 measuring the scientific way but miss saying I’m 8.4 x 6.6. Is the side and base really cheating in your opinion?
