How do main weapon upgrades from marks work on other characters?

Maybe a stupid question but I'm just unsure how it works. Like if you take the sword mark as another character and you take proficient stance it still says "+6% Attack Speed (Melee)" even if you aren't a melee character, does the buff still apply to your main weapon regardless?
