Word files not opening

When I open Microsoft Word files in finder they are not opening in Word. The only way I can get them to open in Word is by opening them fill the Word app itself.

The documents show up as word documents in folder and I checked and it says Word is the default app for opening them but they don’t open.

When I click the file the app ok my system does change to word by the document itself does not get opened.

How can I fix this?
