Is it normal that luggage repairs cost this much?

Question

Hey all -- I have a Zero Halliburton 30" aluminum spinner that needs repairs (the rubber part of the wheels fell off). After some email conversations with their official repair center I get the following cost breakdown:

  • $20–30 just to buy a box big enough from Home Depot
  • ~$150 to ship it there (~30×20×10 size, UPS/FedEx/USPS all about the same)
  • ~$320 for the repair itself (from ZH’s estimate based on photos — they give a 10-year warranty, I’m in year 6, but they said wheel damage counts as “wear and tear” and isn’t covered)
  • $50 for them to ship it back (at least more reasonable than UPS)

All in, it’s close to $550 — roughly a third of the cost of a new case.

When I bought a “high-end” aluminum case, I really expected it to last for life. I don’t care about dents, but I did assume the wheels would hold up better than this. ZH also markets their “hassle-free” customer service, but honestly this feels like the opposite: lots of hassle and lots of money. From my experience with other “premium” brands, it’s usually either (a) true hassle-free service where they handle the logistics but charge you something, or (b) strong warranty coverage but you cover the shipping. This feels like the worst of both.

Curious to hear how you guys have handled this. Am I missing something obvious here? Thanks!
