What kind of cat prey rolls about?

Advice

This is such a weird question, but I’ve run out of original thought on this one.

My lovely void prefers natural fur toys, so I buy him scraps and put them on a stick which he loves to chase.

Recently however, I’ve noticed a very strange behavior whenever I move the fur scrap by very slowly rolling it around the stick and towards him instead of simply flicking it around. He gets very focused and then attacks it like it was actual prey while making this high-pitched chirping meow (not an ekekeke). It is not a sound he makes in any other situation and at first I thought he was scared of it because it sounds almost distressed, but he really goes to town on that little fur scrap, as if he’s actually trying to snap it’s neck. It’s a whole different type of behavior than he usually exhibits while playing.

Now I’ve obviously unlocked some instinct in him, but here’s the question: what type of prey moves like that?

Small, swift movements like those of birds or mice make sense, as do hiding or escape behaviors. But I cannot for the life of me figure out what might roll around itself slowly and purposefully (and it has to be slow and towards him, otherwise he doesn’t care). Snakes would be an option, but I don’t think cats go for them unless threatened? Maybe a caterpillar?

It’s not that important because he’s truly enjoying the hunt, but I’m just curious because it certainly must have a resemblance to something in the real world to elicit such a reaction.
