Did I overreact to what my ex said?
My ex and I moved back in last summer, and got back together for a while. Unfortunately due to my anxiety and his communication issues we broke up, with me initiating the break up because we were caught in a horrible cycle of pursue-retreat basically.
Right after we broke up I began talking to another person. Within a month or so I brought her home, not to make him jealous, but because I thought we were both good with the breakup. And it didn’t seem to bother him. He didn’t end up telling me until a month later that it upset him and he tried to get back together with me while I was in this relationship. I did not break up with my partner at the time to get back with him, and he and I did not hang out for some months. After my partner and I had broken up, I tried to open the door to he and I dating again.
He’s referenced his in several of our conversations and makes me think he is hurt by how I did not really talk to him for some months. He’s basically told me that he wants to rebuild a friendship first from start, and move up from there over time. I am fine with this however his pace combined with lack of communication fuels my ROCD. Because I am always comparing how our relationship is now, and now the vibe feels different.
I know on some level he still has feelings for me because he said he does, and there was one night when we ended up cuddling in bed, which he asked for, and had sex. And this is big because he is not a touchy person or a sexual person (I think he is on the ace-spectrum). And spooned me and held my hand afterwards, and tried to kiss me.
However on his days off he just hangs out by himself in his room and goes to get lunch by himself. I confronted him about why he doesn’t ask me to go get food with him like we used to do for the first few years of our friendship/relationship. He said that “You don’t really like the foods I like, or you’re not hungry when I am a lot of the time, and I kind of think of going out together to do this as kind of a date.”
I said “Okay, I get it, you don’t see me that way anymore.”
And he just looked perplexed and frustrated and said that I made a huge leap in thinking from what he said. And that this is why he doesn’t like answering my questions because I overreact to whatever he says.
Did I? What else could he have meant? Am I overthinking what he said?
