Is it normal for landlord to request a photo of an ID?

I might move in with my friend. He’s asking me for a photo of an ID. Is this normal?

He says it’s in case I don’t pay rent and run out.

I’ve never been asked for an ID.

Should I send the photo? Or is it normal or understandable to deny sending a photo, and see if he would still like to have me room with him?

Not sure if I’m overthinking. Is there any actual risk of him having my ID?
