This is an original Umamusume designed by [KOPPERION](https://x.com/kopperion), featuring Hokuto Vega (ホクトベガ), the Queen of Dirt in Japan.

.

Yeah, I know the story of Hokuto Vega I posted recently is very, very long, but I still think it’s necessary to include the details in order to give more insight into her life and her influence toward others.

Still, I get that it takes a lot of time to read through, which isn’t the best way to share her story. So I’ve decided to put together a quick summary, while keeping the original post available for anyone who’s interested in reading the full, detailed version of her story.

Alright, let's get started!

# A "Ugly Duckling"

Hokuto Vega (ホクトベガ) was born at Sakai Farm (酒井牧場) on March 26, 1990. She was considered unattractive as a racehorse and sold for only 10 million yen, the cheapest of her crop. Early on, she was bullied by other horses and struggled in training, which delayed her debut until the age of three.

Hokuto Vega finally debuted on January 5, 1993, winning the race by nine lengths, which was a big surprise to many. Though she finished second in her next start, she quickly rebounded, taking her following race by three lengths. She then captured [the G3 Flower Cup](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhpf2nVGY_o), earning her first graded victory—and her first win on turf. That success also secured her a priority entry into the G1 Oka Sho, one of Japan’s top races for three-year-old fillies.

# Road to the Princess on Turf

In [the G1 Oka Sho](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZITjf_QKKc), she encountered another horse named ***Vega (ベガ)***. Although Vega had a crooked left leg, she gave the impression of being a naturally talented filly, in sharp contrast to Hokuto Vega. In the end, Vega won the race, securing the first victory on the Triple Tiara path.

In her next start, [the G1 Japanese Oaks](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4mAuHqHiLA), Vega triumphed again, becoming the ninth filly in JRA history to complete the Spring Double Tiara.

In the final leg of the Triple Tiara that time, [the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57tsJLZ95Wo), Hokuto Vega finally surpassed Vega and secured her first G1 victory.

After the race, however, given her ability to compete against colts and the heavy weights that G1 winners were required to carry, she struggled to find suitable races, and her performances were not outstanding. At one point, her trainer even considered entering her in jump races, which was an unexpected and almost unthinkable decision for a past G1 winner. But that idea was soon abandoned after she produced a good result in her next race.

# Road to the Dirt Queen

In 1995, new exchange rules between the JRA and NAR opened the door for cross-competition in dirt racing. Though Hokuto Vega had begun her career on turf, her powerful frame made her a natural fit for these opportunities.

Her first major test came in [the Empress Cup](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmMXCvMdmAM) at Kawasaki, a dirt race for mares. With her career hanging in the balance, she delivered a stunning performance: charging to the lead, widening her margin lap by lap, and crossing the line like a shooting star. Winning by an estimated 18 lengths, she stunned the crowd and was hailed as the newly crowned “Queen of Dirt.”

She then returned to turf and tried five races, but the best she managed was a second-place finish. At the start of 1996, she went back to Kawasaki to compete in [the Kawasaki Kinen](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Jn_oykeH-o&t=53s), where she defeated ***Lively Mount (ライブリマウント)***, the first beneficiary of the exchange rules, who had already won three NAR races and was preparing to challenge the world’s richest race, the Dubai World Cup.

After this race, she swept through the NAR racecourses. From [Funabashi](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5fpPSzjj1A) and [Takasaki](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIUj8ifXfqE) to [Oi](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgvibEFrLt4) and Kawasaki, wherever she appeared, crowds of fans—many of them female fans—flocked to see her, making her an idol on dirt. Her popularity may even have saved some racecourses from the threat of bankruptcy and closure.

Before her next race, [the Nambu Cup](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-owszZTs9M), Hokuto Vega was diagnosed with a bowed tendon in her left foreleg. To everyone’s surprise, the tendon healed in just a month, and despite it being her first time racing at Morioka, and with a different jockey, she won the Nambu Cup by seven lengths, as if nothing had ever happened. She was like the Mona Lisa—her strength an everlasting mystery, as her trainer said.

# Her Final Journey

In the twilight of her career, Hokuto Vega’s race choices resembled a farewell tour. She returned to [the Queen Elizabeth II Cup](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Q8Pns6nANY), where she had first captured G1 glory, finishing fourth against rivals such as ***Hishi Amazon (ヒシアマゾン)***. She then conquered [the Urawa Kinen](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IErSFQlpFY), completing her sweep of the South Kanto dirt tracks. To close 1996, she ran in the fan-voted [Arima Kinen](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRpzTlD80GQ), finishing ninth on turf but earning year-end honors as JRA’s Best Dirt Horse and receiving the NAR Special Award.

By early 1997, at age seven, she stood once again at Kawasaki, where her dirt legend began, preparing for [the Kawasaki Kinen](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvIIwTyQuLE) and, beyond it, her final challenge in the Dubai World Cup. At last, Hokuto Vega won the race by three lengths, achieving her tenth consecutive graded victory on dirt, a record that remains unbroken to this day. It seemed the perfect ending to her story in Japan, yet one final stage still awaited her.

.

After she arrived in Dubai to prepare for her last race, her condition was poor—she even developed cracks in her hooves. Yet thanks to the help of an American farrier, the hard work of everyone involved with Hokuto Vega, and her own resilience, her condition gradually improved until she was fit to compete.

After being postponed by record-breaking torrential rain, [the 1997 Dubai World Cup](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MnECuYkeYg) **(This video may contain disturbing footage)** was finally held on April 3. In what was meant to be her retirement race, she fell and suffered a catastrophic fracture in her front leg. There was nothing her trainer could do to save her. Just minutes later, Hokuto Vega was euthanized on the sands of Dubai, and became the Big Dipper shining in the sky.

There had been plans to send her body back to Japan, but quarantine regulations made this impossible. The only relics preserved before her burial in Dubai were her horseshoes and her hair, which were brought back to Sakai Farm. Her hair was then laid to rest beneath a tomb there, a silent monument to the Queen of Dirt.

.

This is a brief summary of the Dirt Queen Hokuto Vega’s career: an “ugly duckling” tale that ended in tragedy.
