German Rail Question

Hi guys! Dumb question incoming:

My family from the US is coming to visit and apparently someone online said that they could buy twin german rail passes when they get here. Online it says this is not for Americans and only for people from Europe/with residence in Europe and that they should use Eurail instead. They seem to be under the impression that I could “fake it” for them by asking for the tickets myself, but I assume DB will ask for their documents for the tickets anyhow and that it won’t work out.

Can someone confirm my suspicions so I can officially tell them this will not work or am I too hung up on the rules and there is a chance?
