Advice for fall/ winter surfing

Hello Im 18M w surfskate exp and in the last two summers i got into surfing and surfed 3-4 days each summer in portugal.(Im from germany) I surfed on a foamy but i think i got the basics slowly down O_o I cant wait till summer to surf again so im thinking about flixbussing to italy this fall/winter to surf there Is there something important to consider planing surfing in colder temeratures? And a friend suggested i switched on a hardtop… Is that the move? I would be really happy for advice (:
