Will crushed blue stone 3/8" work for bedding layer in open-graded base?

I'm north of Boston and doing a 400 square foot paver patio project. I want to use open graded base given the freeze / thaw cycles that we have here in winter. I tried a couple of other stores close by but they all recommended 3/4 minus and concrete sand.
