Good as a starter doll?

I was poor growing up and I couldn't afford an American Girl doll. Now as an adult I was wondering if the price/investment is worth it? I never had a large doll like this and I'm not sure if I should dive into the hobby with American Girl doll or choose a cheaper brand? Pros and cons?
