am I the asshole? I went no contact with my neighbor after they scammed me out of $185.
Hello Reddit,
I have never posted one of these but I am ruminating on this and I need to get outside perspective.
Background information to provide context:
I moved to where I am about a year ago and around the same time, met my neighbors. They are about my age, (32 F) and the one I went no contact with is around 29, and is very upfront about ADHD and ND diagnoses.
We have been friendly with each other, sometimes existing in the same social circles. We carpooled to public transportation when they didn't have a car, I started walking their dog 2x a week when their dog walker quit suddenly. They sometimes pay me when they can afford, or we have traded pet sitting services.
They, like me, have been upfront about their financial struggles so when I was presented a job opportunity that required a second person, I asked them if they wanted to make some money with me.
After the job was done, I was told that I would paid over venmo and it was communicated to my neighbor that after I received the payment over venmo, I would split the payment and send what they are owed over to them. The next morning, the payment was received and my neighbor reached out to me to confirm. I sent them a screenshot from Venmo showing proof and then said I was sending it over. They then mentioned something about paying a little less because they owed me for dog walking so I adjusted and sent it over to them via venmo.
They absolutely lose their shit over this and start blowing up my phone saying things like "why didn't you ask where the payment should go" "my venmo account is banned" they were really upset and stuck on the fact that I didn't ask where i should send it first. In my anxiety and overwhelm from their texting, I sent an additional payment over apple pay while saying we need to figure out how to recover the payment.
I called venmo and as you can probably guess, they can't recover it but they also could only do so much and said that the recpient of the payment should call and try to reverse it.
I sent a text to my neighbor saying that we need to talk about repayment for the duplicate and they said no, they they shouldn't be held responsible for my mistake.
soooo now i'm out almost $400 and no longer speak to said neighbor.
i'm sure i'm missing more context- so ask away, but am i the asshole for this?
