Using Smooth Motion for Helldivers 2 on PC

DISCUSSION

My Current Specs:

Current PC specs:

Motherboard: Gigabyte B560 DS3H AC-Y1

RAM: 2x 16GB DDR4 3600 T-Force Vulcan

CPU: 11th Gen Intel i7-11700K @3.60GHz, 3200 Mhz, 8 Cores

GPU: RTX 4070

Monitor: ACER Predator XB283K KV; 4k, 144Hz

I'm curious if anyone else has looked at using Smooth Motion in their Nvidia app since they introduced it not too long ago. I only just came across it a couple weeks ago when someone recommended it for Star Citizen. I believe you have to have a 40 series card or higher. I have an RTX 4070 and have been using it for Star Citizen and Helldivers for a couple weeks now. Per Nvidia's site, "NVIDIA Smooth Motion is a driver-based AI model that delivers smoother gameplay by inferring an additional frame between two rendered frames, for titles without DLSS Frame Generation support."

Now for my personal experience with it. Due to my CPU, I usually find myself a little bottlenecked with most graphicly demanding games and have to upscale, which is fine. But I gave it a try because Star Citizen was really rough on frames for me in certain cases, despite upscaling and a number of other tweaks I made to my PC and game settings. The results were so good I tried it for Helldivers. I was upscaling Helldivers with most graphics settings right in the middle. This yielded frames around 60-70, dipping down in to the lower 50s and worse at times. When I flipped on smooth motion in the Nvidia app, I was instantly maxing my monitor's frames at 144. It basically doubled my frames. So then, I set my image scaling to native (4k), and ramped up all my graphics settings to max. And I'm STILL pulling 90-110 fps most of the time. The lowest I've seen it dip is high 80s, but even then, it's only for a moment.

THE ONE DOWNSIDE - Image smoothing can introduce some amount of input latency. From my research, it varies from PC to PC. I gotta imagine there's ways to mitigate it though. For me, I barely noticed the input latency. I mean, I can tell it's there, but it's so negligible and it has not affected my aim or performance in the slightest. For some, any amount of input latency is probably a deal breaker, which is completely understandable.

Anyways, I make this post because this setting helped me immensely and got this game, and others now, to where I wanted them to be graphicly. Upgrading my PC again would be a little more costly, sinch in order to upgrade my CPU again, I'd also have to upgrade my motherboard and likely my RAM again. For those of us who need to hold off on spending money to upgrade, image smoothing may be a nice holdover/alternative for a while.

Hope this helps!!! : )
