Residency classification

Ask a Hoosier

Hi everyone,

I need some advice about residency classification and re-enrollment at my university. I haven’t been enrolled for the past three semesters, but I’m planning to return next fall. I am not on a student visa im on pending asylum and it’s been over a year since I last attended. I also don’t receive international student benefits, so being classified as international feels unfair.

I’m trying to understand my options: • Could completing two years at a community college in Indiana or obtaining a GED help me qualify for in-state residency? • If my request is denied, who else should I escalate to (Dean of Students, VP of Enrollment, etc.)? • I know of people in similar situations—undocumented or with pending asylum—who were able to qualify for in-state tuition because they completed high school in Indiana. If the school is re-enrolling other students in similar situations, why not me?

Has anyone been in a similar situation or know of strategies to get fair consideration for in-state residency under these circumstances? Any guidance or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much.
