Does it hurt to get a septum re opened?

My local piercing shop gave me the option to get it re pierced or professionally stretched/tapered open. It was only pierced for around a year and the jewelry has been out for a few months now. The guy I spoke to said getting it stretched open hurts a little more but it heals quicker, also free! Thoughts? I’m indecisive.
