Grandparent Financial Advisor? Sort of..
Hello!
I am seeking any information that fellow redditors can tell me about this situation. I unfortunately do not have much financial verbiage or knowledge so please bear with me. I am from the U.S.
My grandparents are elderly, and my grandmother has alzheimer's. It's been progressively getting worse, and in preparation, my family has been discussing adding someone onto my grandparents accounts that can babysit them (for now). My grandma just wants to be sure that she isn't double paying bills, forgetting to pay bills, giving too much money away when (other) family needs help; and wants me to "watch" her to know when her bills are due and know if they're paid or not.
I am in another state than my grandparents. What is the best way for me to do this? Should she just give me her login information and I monitor her accounts? Should I be added onto the accounts? Is there a name for what I would be acting as for her, like power of attorney or something? What risks might we not be thinking of?
I understand I am not entirely financially savvy and people will be asking why I was chosen if I don't even know this basic stuff, but I was chosen because no one is concerned about me keeping the money for myself should my grandparents unexpectedly pass and my grandmother herself is concerned of being taken advantage of by strangers and other family members. I appreciate your time reading this post and any information will be helpful. Thank you!
