Which Bachelor’s Degree is Best for a Career in Quantitative Finance?
I’m planning my undergrad at the University of Sydney and I want to get into quantitative finance (ideally as a quant trader, quant researcher, or quant developer) down the line. I’m trying to figure out which degree would set me up best for this path.
Right now, I’m considering three options: • Bachelor of Science with a Major in Data Science • Bachelor of Advanced Computing (likely majoring in Data Science or Computer Science) • Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences
My goal is to eventually do a Master’s in Quant/Computational Finance (maybe at a top UK or US university), then work in algorithmic trading or quant roles.
I’m decent at math and coding, but I want to choose the degree that would make my CV stand out for quant internships and jobs, while also giving me the right skills (maths, programming, probability, statistics, etc.).
Which of these degrees would you say gives the best foundation for quant finance? Would employers care more about the math-heavy degree (Math Sciences) or the programming/data-focused ones (Adv Computing/Data Science)?
Would love to hear from anyone in quant finance or who’s gone down a similar path.
