Question about episode 6, was the incident in the fly lab a setup?

So I remember one of the synths went to the cage with the wasp in it, seems like the door broke but I'm not sure that is meant to show that the door was sabotaged to eventually lock him in, or if the cage is corroding due to the wasp creature. Like is could be extruding something gaseous that gets into all the nooks and crannies and eats away at the metal.

I think the room had a lot of rust on the walls nearest the nest so could make sense.

If it was sabotage was Kirsh testing to see how dangerous the creature is to Synths and androids, and was willing to sacrifice a lost boy as he considers himself superior to them and assumes they are utterly disposable?
