Growing my business

Discussion

Hi everyone,

I run a youth sports program that works directly with schools. Think of it like the extra ballet or karate teacher model — I come in, run sessions after school, and parents sign their kids up. Right now I’ve got about 70 kids across my schools, plus one school that pays me directly through an agreement for services. The model works, and the kids/parents really enjoy it.

My main challenge now is growth. I feel like the hardest part is actually getting into new schools.

Schools normally say we not interested at the moment and we fear it will pull kids from their schools co curricular activities or slots are full for extra murals — sending proposals, emails, waiting on replies, convincing principals or coordinators. Once I’m inside, things run smoothly. But breaking through that initial wall feels unnecessarily tough.

I’ll also be honest: I sometimes feel like being black makes it harder for businesses and schools to take me seriously compared to, say, a white person doing the exact same thing. It’s not the end of the world, but it does feel like an extra layer of resistance.

Has anyone here worked in businesses that sell directly into schools (whether sports, arts, or other activities)? How do you get schools to listen, reply, and give you a chance? Any tips on approaching the right decision-makers, or making the pitch more effective?

I focus mainly on primary schools, but I’m open to high schools too. Would love to hear from anyone who’s done something similar or faced these kinds of challenges.

Thanks!
