The Bar: do I stand any chance?
Hi - I'm an international student from Asia and I graduated from the LSE with a law degree. It's always been my dream to become a barrister in England. The thing is I'm not sure if I stand any chance getting a pupillage in my intended field given how competitive the scene is.
- I do have a first-class degree, BUT it was about the most borderline of any first class degree. My university decides final grades upon eight units of courses taken in the second and third years; and they gave firsts to people with 3 first class marks out of them, while also having an average of 67.5 or above across all. I have exactly 3 first class marks and an average of 67.6. Also these 3 firsts were in subjects not quite related to any area of practice (e.g. things like legal history/philosophy, etc.). The lowest module mark I had among the eight was a 58. Not to mention my even bleaker first year grades - I barely had an average of 60 then.
- I tried applying to the Oxford BCL and the Cambridge LLM while in my third year, and was rejected. I've been told that with my final grades, I'd hardly stand a chance getting in if I applied again this year.
- The key bit: I want to practise at the commercial bar, where I know a first class law degree from a RG uni is the bare minimum for any application to even be entertained, and Oxbridge postgrad courses being somewhat a must if you dont have a first class undergrad degree from either. Things seem sobering where they stand now, it feels like I dont quite stand a chance at the English commercial bar.
- A bit more about myself: I'm paralegalling in a city firm now while also enrolled in the ICCA Part I. Aside from Commercial, I'm also interested in general common law/chancery work. Would be "dreams come true" for me if I ever get a pupillage in any of these areas.
- Appeciate any honest advice, even if they'd sound harsh or sobering.
- Thank you for your time.
