A Youth Centre for Adelaide?

Discussion

I have noticed an ever-increasing number of posters share how they are young /or new to Adelaide /or lonely /or want to find some friends, and how unlike in America and England and even the eastern states there is pretty much no youth centers, where young people can go hang out and make new friends.

  • sure, there are shopping centers, but they expect you to spend money.
  • yes, there are libraries, but they usually expect you to stay silent.
  • there's heaps of extracurricular activities out there, but they expect you to do structured stuff.
  • nightclubbing is obviously a thing but that comes with an expectation of drinking alcohol.
  • singles groups are another option, but they expect you to date.
  • speed friending exists too, but those events expect you to talk to random people rapid fire.
  • neurodivergent/LGBT social groups abound, but they expect you to fit those identities.
  • church groups are out there, but they expect you to be religious.

I have long thought The Western Youth Centre on Marion Road in Cowandilla would be a perfect space to open up for lonely /or socially isolated young (17/18 to mid 30's) people to just hang out, watch movies, play board/card games, not only because its centrally located but it also gives off massive 60's vibes.

Ever since I was a small child i thought the WYC would be just like the movies, so I was disappointed as an adult when i realized the WYC is just another hall for hire, where attendees must partake in activities.

I know we have had these drop in style youth center's before, the former HIVE out near TTP comes to mind, and if they are not ran correctly they can end up with more staff there than participants attending, not to mention become a hotbed of gang activity and violence as is sometimes the case in America/England.
