How to apply for vacation schemes with a low 2:2 in first year
Context:
Im an academic student at UCL, studying law. I did quite badly in my first year, achieving an average of about 55. My highest grade was a 57; all 4 grades a received were a 2:2. I did I year of history last year and averaged a 2:1, achieving 70 in one module so I know I'm not incapable. I wish to practice commercial law. Up until now, I have secured some good experience like an AOShearman internship and the Bird and Bird first year programme, as well as extensive legal aid volunteering and a mini pupillage at a local chambers. I am going into second year this month but I don't want to give up hope with vac scheme applications as I have lots of free time right now and they seem worth a shot, even if I get rejected (for practice). My first year doesn't count towards my degree classification so I am technically still on track for a 2:1. I am aiming for a first by 3rd year. First year was just a really bad year and I had a lot of financial strain but did not receive an Extenuating Circumstances note for it. I am working on this now but UCL admin are so slow. I am looking at Winter and Spring vac schemes as summers are notoriously harder to get I believe.
My questions:
-
Magic circle vac schemes are out of the question right now probably, but which other commercial law firms could I apply to with these circumstances? (I know that now i have to start small and work my way up so I don't expect silver circles to even accept with these grades.)
-
Does anyone have any experience applying with a 2:2 in first year for winter vac schemes or TCs and being successful?
-
Any tips on how to mould this difficult situation in an application into one showing growth and a positive trajectory?
-
Should I wait for next year to apply for winter/spring vac schemes instead?
Thanks
