Second car for the outdoors

Current driver is a small sedan that I'm planning to keep for errands and work. I'm starting to feel limited by the places I can go with it, like there's so many potholes. I want something with higher clearance. I also plan to go skiing, so would like having AWD as well.

What is a good second car to get for a good value solely for the purpose of going outdoors?

Budget: 12k or less
