How necessary are the lids on comic boxes?

Long story short, I can fit two short boxes per shelf if I remove the lids of them. How necessary are these lids? Is it okay to leave them off? Or should I somehow make a smaller lid? Perhaps by cutting off the side flaps and tape one edge to the box so it's a sort of flap.
