How do you approach documentary/verbatim theatre as an actor?
I'm currently in a show where all the dialogue is taken from interviews with people recounting their experience of a traumatic event. There's not any back and forth between the characters, it's just separate monologues. I'm a little confused on how I should act my part. In the past I've learned that you should identify your character's goal and the tactics they use to reach that goal, but in this play there's not really a goal? All the characters are just telling their stories to the audience, so it's hard to figure out who they're talking to, what they need from them, etc. I'm worried that I'll just end up trying to play the emotion of what I'm saying rather than fully understanding my character. How have you all approached verbatim theatre in the past? Thanks!
