Think I'm finally getting somewhere
Hey everyone, I'm 21M and I've been addicted for around 6 years now.
I've been trying to quit more or less for a couple years now. I'm currently 14 days clean from weed, 14 days clean from nicotine and 5 days clean from porn.
I think my weed and porn addictions fed into each other, which is why I quit them together. It probably sounds like a lot all at once, but I’ve been doing a good job shifting my focus and energy elsewhere.
What I've realized from my past failures is that simply trying to avoid these addictions is not enough. In the past trying to quit I've just been depressed, tired, and I would be able to resist for 1 or 2, or maybe even 3 days at a time, but I would just shift that time I would have spent PMOing to another bad habit (scrolling, gaming, or smoking).
I started reading atomic habits about 2 weeks ago, and I honestly think that it is a game changer. I'm not saying that it instantly fixed my life or anything, but it has definitely changed my perspective. I've started focusing on building healthy habits rather than just avoiding unhealthy habits.
In the past 2 weeks I've begun building habits that I've actually started to enjoy doing. I started meal prepping, studying consistently, reading daily, and I'm starting a part-time job through the college I attend. I've also joined a couple clubs and I've been building friendships with people who are very future oriented and that's definitely been helping.
I've never been so motivated and at the end of the day it feels great looking back at what I've been accomplishing each and every day. My head has begun feeling clearer and though I've relapsed during these past 2 weeks, the urges are getting easier and easier to resist. I genuinely think I'm breaking free.
I know I have a long way to go, but for the first time in years I feel like I'm moving in the right direction and that's enough to keep me going.
