Just wondering at what point did British democracy evolve into a televised bake-off?

Where the true measure of leadership is whether a politician can queue at Greggs without sparking a class war, mispronouncing bacon bap, or triggering a week-long debate on authenticity in regional pastry consumption? Is the ability to order a steak bake while maintaining eye contact with a pensioner now considered more electorally valuable than a coherent economic policy? And do we have data on whether Keir Starmer’s cautious sausage roll nibble polls better than Farage’s full-throated pasty nationalism?
