What person (in your life or some famous person) tells you a movie is good and you will watch said movie because you trust their opinion?
I’ve been thinking a lot about how much a person’s movie taste says about who they are. It’s not just about what they like to watch—it’s about what they connect with, what makes them laugh, cry, or think. Whenever someone recommends a movie, it feels like they’re giving me a small window into how they see the world.
For example, if someone suggests a classic like The Shawshank Redemption or Goodfellas, I immediately get a sense that they value strong storytelling and memorable characters. If they’re into quirky comedies like Napoleon Dynamite or Step Brothers, I know they don’t take themselves too seriously and probably have a goofy sense of humor. And if they recommend something deep and artsy, like Her or Everything Everywhere All at Once, it tells me they might be introspective or just really into creative, experimental ideas.
But here’s where it gets interesting—when you actually watch the movie they recommend. If you love it too, it creates this instant connection, like you’ve discovered a shared language. If you don’t like it, though, it can be awkward. Suddenly you’re wondering, “Do we just see the world completely differently?”
I think movie preferences can be a low-key trust test in relationships, whether it’s with friends, family, or a partner. If someone consistently recommends movies I enjoy, I start to trust their opinions more, not just about movies but in general.
So, here’s my question for you all: what movies do you use as a “litmus test” to see if someone shares your taste? Do you have a film that, if someone hates it, you know you probably won’t click with them? And has a recommendation ever completely changed how you saw a person?
