Don't continue to pursue someone if you don't feel "a spark"

I was dating a guy for a few months. We lived in different states but would travel to visit with each other. I really liked him but I followed his lead, trying to stay grounded knowing that we were long distance. But then the things he did kept showing me he was interested, like telling his friends they'll be seeing him less because he'll be flying down to see me more, talking about me to all his friends and coworkers, introducing me to all his friends and bringing me to events with them, inviting me to plans in the upcoming months, etc.

At one point we checked in and he said he wasn't sure about continuing on, I cried in front of him because it felt like it was out of nowhere. I went home, and that was it. It hurt but it ended on decent terms. A couple weeks later we called and talked, and he felt completely different. Said his mind shifted after I cried with him and he had some space to reflect. When he thought about our time together he said I'd far exceeded his expectations compared to other women he's dated. We cleared up miscommunication issues about the distance and what our expectations were, what the future could look like, and agreed to communicate more. We called more, I asked him about any doubts or anything, it felt like we were in a better place than before. We were making plans for multiple trips.

After a few weeks we were finally about to meet up again. I mentioned one of the next trips we had planned and he said we'd call and talk about it during the week as he wanted to focus on one trip at a time and process the weekend before the next trip. That felt odd but I tried not to read into it. I tried to act like everything was fine, still sent cute messages, pictures of flights for our next trip, etc and thought whatever it was that felt off would be something minor to work through.

Apparently not. He was mad that I acted normal, saying I was trying to play with his emotions when I really just wanted to feel normal and believe that things were fine. He said it didn't matter how it was intended, it was how it was received. He said I misread the situation and that he wanted to talk about us, not our next trip. He said he didn't have "a romantic spark." It felt out of nowhere, but he said he mentioned it during our first break, but he never mentioned that it was still a concern afterwards so I honestly forgot about it and didn't think an issue anymore. He liked that we had so much in common but said he only felt like we were friends. He said the romantic spark wasn't there compared to other women he's dated (and look how those turned out. Idk.) I tried to thank him for our time and for being someone important and a bit of light for me, and he instead wanted to end the call saying he was getting emotional. I feel so unsettled compared to the first time. I feel so stupid. I feel bad for the way I acted but I can't tell him. It won't matter anyway.

I don't know. There was definitely a connection, he admitted he felt it when we first started, but said it shifted after a while. Maybe we were getting comfortable with each other like people do when they've been dating for a while? I just don't get it. And I know I shouldn't try to understand it but it's unfortunate. When I said that to him, he told me this could be the best thing that happens to me... Not the time or person who should be saying that to me. I don't know, to me relationships don't always have a big spark, but sometimes it becomes a soft glow of safety and just day to day happiness with that person. Idk. If he truly didn't feel a spark, it's hurtful that he even wanted to try again. And I feel stupid for letting him back in again.
