Epic challenge how does it work when behind a wall

I recently played a 40K game where my opponent was as playing knights and said he could epic challenge my leaders despite being several models away from his unit and being behind a wall, what’s the rule on it then, it was specifically canis Rex and because of it he killed both leaders in my unit, if possible please provide an official explanation
