AITA for implying that my (m22) fiancee (f26) isn’t a real doctor?
While I’ve never been super healthy, I’ve never dealt with any kind of serious illnesses at any point in my twenty two years of life. I’ve smoked socially since my sophomore year of high school, I got up to a lot of underage drinking and I’ve tried a few drugs- all without any noticeable consequences. Really, if you didn’t know I did these things, you wouldn’t have any idea that I ever had. Until now.
Recently, I’ve been getting sick. Not seriously at first, but noticeably so. A few months ago, I started getting headaches, unexplainable stomach pains, feeling dizzy and tired for no reason, that kind of thing. Nothing that worrying but weird random stuff out of nowhere, with no significant changes to my lifestyle or anything else. I was a little bit concerned but my fiancee (f26) managed to calm me down and convince me that it wasn’t a big deal. She’s in her third year of med school, so I usually defer to her opinion on medicine related topics. I was comfortable with trusting my fiancee’s medical opinion, taking Tylenol liberally and mostly just ignoring my weird symptoms.
But they’ve been getting worse as time has gone on. Since August, I’ve been feeling exhausted all the time, weirdly cold and shivering despite how warm it’s been, vomiting after pretty much every meal, some occasional chest pain and I’ve fainted a few times. I’ve gotten sick and experienced some of these symptoms before but never like this, never all at once. It’s been seriously exhausting to deal with all of these symptoms and I’ve barely been able to leave the house since I’ve started experiencing them. I haven’t been working, I’m barely able to do my university classes online, let alone in person, and I haven’t been able to help that much around the house. My fiancee is an absolute angel and she’s pretty much taken over everything, including cleaning our house and cooking everything. She’s been great about this whole thing and I appreciate her endlessly.
This Thursday, I threw up blood. Or at least what I thought looked like blood? I don’t want to go into a lot of detail describing what my vomit looked like because ew, frankly. But it was definitely red and I was too exhausted to clean it up so I kind of just fell asleep on the bathroom floor until my fiancee came home. When she came home, I told my fiancee I was pretty worried about throwing up blood but she just brushed this off. She told me that I was making a big deal out of nothing and it definitely didn’t look like blood to her. She definitely knows better than I do but I was still worried. So I told my fiancee that I’d like to go to the hospital and talk to an actual doctor about everything that’s been happening. I instantly knew I fucked up because I know my fiancee always gets upset when I imply she’s not a real doctor but I wasn’t expecting her to get this upset. She told me that I was being ridiculous and demeaning and that I could sleep on the couch that night before leaving the bathroom in tears.
A few days later, my fiancee still seems upset about the other night and we haven’t been talking as much as we usually do. She’s still amazing about taking care of me though. She’s still been cooking for me and labelling my food separately in the fridge and cleaning so much that the kitchen smells like bleach half the time. I just hate knowing that I hurt the feelings of someone who clearly loves me and cares for me so much but I don’t know how to go about this.
So reddit, am I the asshole?
