Why Was My Boss Always Dumping Extra Work on Me?
For two years, I thought staying late was just part of the job. My boss, Mike, had this habit of sending me “urgent” tasks after hours. Always me. Never anyone else.
At first, I brushed it off. But eventually, it became impossible to ignore. He’d “forget” to assign reports until the last minute, then demand I finish them at night. One evening, when I pushed back because I had plans, he implied that my career here depended on my “dedication.”
That was the last straw.
I went through my inbox and realized I had months’ worth of late-night emails from him. Most weren’t urgent at all. Some even conflicted with deadlines he gave to other people. Remembering that HR had access to the email servers, I decided to forward everything over—politely asking if this was normal company practice.
A week later, Mike looked like he’d seen a ghost. HR had investigated, compared workloads, and discovered he was offloading his own responsibilities onto me while taking credit for the results.
Not long after, the company sent out a cheerful announcement: Mike was “moving on to new opportunities.”
That day, I clocked out at exactly 5:00 PM—with a smile.
